Audiobooks for life

I was jittery. Elijah was half-asleep. I was desperate for a new start. He hated change. But when I started the car and began our first audio book, someone new entered the conversation. Alexandre Dumas. Within minutes, we were transported to the world of The Three Musketeers.

This story warms my heart.

Audiobooks have held such a special place for me the last decade or so. It’s almost like discovering them unlocked a whole new way of experiencing the world. My wife and I are full converts to the world of audiobooks, and both our kids are sucked in as well. Our Audible library alone is over 500 books at this point.

Literature, both fiction and non-fiction has a way of entering the mind and helping to shape and define the soul. I believe I’m a more empathetic person because of all the stories I’ve read, both historical and draumatized.

As a parent I had many things I hoped to pass on to my children, and I’m proud to say that a love of storytelling has successfully been one of them.

Early on in our son’s life we presented numerous books to him. We tried Kindle, story books, audibooks. Our goal was to inspire that spark for reading. What finally did it was a book about cryptids and dinosaurs. Since then he’s poured so many stories, including most of Brandon Sanderon’s fictional universe.

I love the idea of transitioning between history and fiction. I personally alternate about every four months between fiction and non-fiction, loving to hear stories made up as well as real.
