Between two password managers

1Password is a fantastic app. I’ve used it for years and both my wife and I rely on it for managing our lives. With Apple’s introduction of Passwords, a simple app that brings their password tools to the forefront, I’ve been dipping my toes in the native app waters.

This is the age old question I wrestle with on all app categories. When deciding between paid and free the paid version has to be far better than free.

Is 1Password (1P) better? Yes. Is it 10x better than Apple Passwords? No. So I’ve been testing Passwords a bit, allowing it to auto fill passwords for new accounts and password changes. I’ve even let my 1P membership expire. I have read access to everything, but can’t write to it.

The challenge comes when I don’t know which app has the latest password. So, living in both worlds isn’t ideal, but it’s given me time to analyze pros and cons of each.

First, I love Passwords native integration into Safari. Though I’m debating going back to Chrome (I’m tired of web apps not working on Safari), at the moment it’s so easy to create and modify passwords right in the browser. I know 1P has an extension, but for some reason I’ve never connected well to it.

Right now I have no source of truth. Each app has some of my content, but not all, so I just end up checking both. I can’t continue forever in this state, so I’ll just pick one or the other. But I’m guessing Passwords will win out because it’s native and free.
