How much to share
I’m always torn between how little and how much should be shared. Of course there’s things I’ll just never post online, preferring instead to share with friends.
With that said, even within the limits of what I’ll post I’m often looking for the angle. Is the post for me, is it for an invisible audience, or for someone I know? I love Gruber’s take that he writes for the theoretical identical version of himself.
I like that.
Writing for me is putting out what I wish I could have read somewhere else. The bar between the quality of what I’d hope to read and what I write isn’t a one to one relationship. But, with practice I’ve worked to close the gap over the years.
When I post I often write for myself, put out the thing that I want to see. It also serves as a memory device. Writing about a thing helps me remember it.
Journaling accomplishes this as well. But I’ve never been able to make journaling stick, and I’d rather put something out that has a chance of being interesting to someone else.
