Making progress

Nothing stays still. Relative to the rest of the world, even something that’s not moving is changing.

It’s tempting to talk about not making fast enough progress.

But it’s far more useful to ask which direction we’re progressing.

Nothing sits still, nothing stays at rest. My favorite line from The office nothwistanding, I’ve grown to appreciate that change is built into the system, it’s a requirement. We can no longer become an inanimate object than we can expect the impossible.

The question then, is what kind of change we’ll bring about, and whether we believe we have the ability to control that change. I wrestle with that personally, daily diving into things that satisfy my curiosity, things that help others, always looking to grow and learn more. But my method is less strategically directed and more following both what I enjoy and what I’m good at.

To ask where we’re headed though, to have a compass, that may be the answer.
