Netflix debuting subtitle only captions

Netflix today announced that it is introducing a new subtitle option that only shows subtitles for spoken dialogue, aimed at those who don't need captions, but prefer to watch movies and TV shows with the subtitles turned on.

Whether because of poor mixing in audio, my cheapo tv setup, or my aging ears, I’ve long chosen to enable closed captions. I don’t want movies or shows without it.

There’s so many little details you can pick up with captions that are often missed with mumbling or loud onscreen sounds.

Netflix debuting subtitle for those who can hear (mostly) fine, but don’t need the extra ambient sounds, is brilliant. I hope more providers will make this move.

Now, my last pet peeve is with comedies or thrillers, where the captions give away the plot a second or so too early.
