Ryan Gosling nails the tone of Project Hail Mary

Andy Weir is one of my favorite writers.

He doesn’t put out books at the pace I’d prefer (we can’t all be Brandon Sanderson), but boy does he nail it with every book.

The Martian was a perfect story. It’s the sort of book I go back to when I want to just fall into a world and have a great time. Artemis (its sort of sequel) wasn’t my favorite, but still a solid passing grade.

Project Hail Mary was as good as The Martian, but in a different way. Without giving too much away I’d say it takes the premise of Mark Watney—man alone away from earth, the planet trying to save him—and turn it on its head. Ryland Grade is a man away from earth trying to save the planet, but in a way you don’t often see in fiction.

Well, the for Project Hail Mary trailer just landed (with major spoilers in the last 20 seconds) and it has Ryan Gosling as lead actor. And boy does he nail it. The premise is exactly as I imagined.

He has the demeanor I’d expect of a man in his situation, and the way he portrays his thoughts on screen (via camera, similar to Mark) is once again a fun trick to allow the audience into his thoughts.

I’m excited about this movie, and might re-read the book leading up to watching it in theatres. Definitely a day one showing in this family.
