Seeking yoyu

Inspired by this fantastic post by Seth Godin on yoyu, where you leave space for surprise and delight, the same can be said for finding time to dig deep into projects and allowing time for ideas to sit.

Often I’ll reach the end of a workday with a mostly-finished design project. It’s close to shipping, but there’s something nagging in the back of my head. Something telling me that it’s not quite where it needs to be.

Sleeping on the project, and coming back in the morning, usually brings the nagging feeling to the forefront and allows clarity to see what needs to be changed.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at a design with fresh eyes and instantly realized I needed to tweak a bunch of things and shift the direction—a revelation that wouldn’t have come to me regardless of more hours thrown at the work.

Allowing space to tinker, sit on things, and think, leads to greater creativity and ultimately a life that’s more enjoyable to live.
