So about naps...

Recently I was hanging out with a friend. He shall not be named, mainly to protect my own embarassement.

Because he had a pet allergy I offered my allergy medicine to help avoid a flair up. He thanked me, and took a moment to read the label on the medicine—a wise choice. Anytime someone hands you pills, over the counter notwithstanding, it doesn’t hurt to make sure that the thing you’re putting into your mouth is safe.

He then read off the side effects. One of which was drowsiness. At first I thought nothing of that. Side effects come and go, and every drug has them, a littany of dangers so common that we just grow to ignore them.

But then my wife spoke up, pointing out that the allergy medicine was intended for nighttime use, not daytime. Suddenly my recent post on naps stood out to me.

Without realizing it I’d been drugging myself for weeks, taking the equivalent of Benadryl first thing in the morning. Needless to say I’ve been fighting daily through fatigue, employing every trick possible to keep up my alertness during work. Thankfully at least one of those weeks was a planned vacation. But still, it’s been all I could do to get through the end of the day and collapse for a short nap at the end.

So, yeah. I’m now taking my allergy medicine at night.
