What I want in the new year

Many years I’ve made lists.

Goals, resolutions, plans. I’ve done them all. Some years the effort pays off. That’s how I ran my first marathon, making a plan and using the new year to kick the habit into gear.

But this year I’m not so sure about any of that. It’s not that those are wrong, but my head is in a different place. My daughter asked what I wanted and I had to pause and think about it. Sure, I’d love more money; who doesn’t.

But mostly I appreciate the intangibles. Running in the woods during a storm. Playing a game of cards with my family. Cuddling my kids before bed. Drinking the perfect smoothie.

The things I want can always be out of my grasp. Or they can be here now. Maybe they can be both.
