Silver Huang's 2024 retrospective
I'm writing this with 2025 just hours away, and I find myself, like most people I imagine, reflecting on 2024.
I always enjoy these end of year retrospectives. I probably should write mine, but maybe next year.
I realized I reached a turning point when I found myself with a new obsession: Teaching myself world building in Minecraft. I found myself building something for my own interest and enjoyment, and nothing and no one else. A genuine hobby. Like friendship, something I've never really had before.
This culminated in a sudden realization that I'm now spending my days thinking about more than just work. I'm building for me, at last, as well as others. There is space in this world for me, my life and joys. Something I've had to learn, and relearn, multiple times in recent years!
Love this. I’m always tinkering with ideas. I’ve found that having a hobby matters. The worst times of my life have been when my energy went entirely to making money.
Having a hobby for its own purpose is a good thing. We don’t need to force everything to become a capital growth opportunity.
With that said, sometimes my hobbies have turned into income potential. That’s fine. When that happens it’s important to find another hobby. Rinse and repeat if necessary.
