What’s your role?

This is a question we ask of everyone in an organization. We want to place them, figure out the walls that makeup who they are and what they do as opposed to others.

But, in almost all cases, it’s not that clear. A designer might also code. A programmer might also design. A product person might also do sales.

People are not the whole sum of a statement that they’d make in an elevator. They’re so much more.

Every child is an artist, but most adults do not claim that title.

For children it’s different, they can be a bit of everything.

Now, this isn’t to say there isn’t value in expertise, digging deep, and focusing on a career. On the contrary much of the joy in my work has come from being good at specific, role based, tasks.

But each person is more than just that, and when we spend a few minutes digging in we’ll uncover so much more than the title they write on a resume.
