Finding the third place
My working life is essential to me, I design and create for a living, so in many ways it is perfect. To earn a living doing something you enjoy is everyone’s dream; however, I have an inability to switch off unless clear lines are drawn. So, as with every idea that plagues my brain, I went exploring options to find a sanctuary away from working life, in an attempt to disconnect.
I love Greg’s approach to figuring out how to compartmentalize his life a bit. He’s a product designer like me, so I suspect much of his life is spent using tech to make tech.
His solution to having a tool to kick back and NOT work is the iPad Mini. Ironically it’s the exact opposite for me.
The iPad Mini is the most essential of tools in my toolbox. I couldn’t imagine being a designer without it.
Still, the sentiment remains. At one point I bought a MacBook Air specifically for fiction writing, wanting a separate device away from the place I work all day.
If I could have a third place device it would likely be an iPad of sorts, but not the one I use for work.
