Minimizing distractions

We live in a world full of distractions, we need to shut that out and focus on the work in front of us. Below are a few tips to get clutter out of the way.

1. A clean desk
At work I clear my desk off. All I need is my laptop, everything else is gone.

2. Desktop
I keep my desktop clean and minimal. The icons are kept to a minimum, generally I have 2-3 icons, that’s it. Everything else goes in its appropriate folder. I’m very strict on this.

3. Applications
Turn off notifications, stop your instant message programs from fighting for your attention.

4. Websites
You don’t need to be checking on the latest news while working, is that really important? I’m guilty of this. I’m most likely to turn to a non work related website when I’m struggling on a problem or procrastinating on a project.

5. Fullscreen
If you’re writing, get an app that let’s you write in full screen, clear out the distractions. If you’re working on a design take your application to full screen, focus on the work in front of you.
